Western Tiger Swallowtail
Scientific Name: Papilio rutulus
The Western Tiger Swallowtail, Papilio rutulus, is a striking butterfly species that graces the Huntington Beach area with its presence during the warmer months. These butterflies have large wings adorned with bold black stripes and vibrant yellow or orange spots. Western Tiger Swallowtails are commonly found in a variety of habitats, including woodlands, gardens, and riparian areas, where they feed on nectar from flowers such as milkweed, thistles, and lilies. They are particularly abundant in late spring and early summer when they engage in courtship flights and mate.
Western Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio rutulus), Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes), and Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor) all inhabit the Urban Forest.
