Sycamore

Scientific Name: Platanus racemosa

The Sycamore, Platanus racemosa, is a stately tree species native to California, including the Huntington Beach area. These massive deciduous trees have distinctive mottled bark, which peels away in patches to reveal creamy white bark underneath. Sycamores are commonly found along waterways, where their extensive root systems help stabilize stream banks and prevent erosion. In spring, Sycamores produce spherical clusters of tiny flowers that give way to round, spiky seed balls. These trees provide important habitat for birds, mammals, and insects and are valued for their shade and aesthetic appeal.
